Spending a lot of money building up a Blu-ray movie collection doesn’t make sense, because in just a short time you will once again be forced to “rebuild” your collection when a new format with more space than Blu-ray is released. Sony may “claim” that they can produce 200GB Blu-ray discs (which they can), but Sony definitely cannot produce multi-layer Blu-ray discs like that in the massive bulk that it would take to produce movies. You need to remember that Sony “claimed” Blu-ray could have “hybrid” discs that were compatible with both Blu-ray and DVD in the same way that HD-DVD discs were. And as it turns out, HD-DVD actually had the “space” advantage over Blu-ray in terms of the “standard” discs used for movies, because the “standard” size of an HD-DVD movie disc was dual-layer 30GB in size, while the “standard” size for a Blu-ray movie disc is only single-layer 25GB in size. But Sony left out the part that said “standard” movie-format discs are not competing “equally,” since standard Blu-ray movie discs use only one “layer” while standard HD-DVD movie discs use two layers. read more
